Their goal is to achieve exceptional performance by embedding citizenship into all of their daily decisions and actions, guided by three core principles:

• Champion the well-being and happiness of kids and families in their endeavors.
For example, Disney is committed to the total well-being — physical, emotional and financial — of their employees. They provide a range of wellness resources to meet the diverse needs of their employees. With approximately 156,000 employees, Disney’s profitability is substantially affected by costs of pension benefits and current and postretirement medical benefits.

• Inspire kids and families to make a lasting, positive change in the world
For example, Disney is focused on ensuring that future generations have experiences and opportunities that help them develop lifelong conservation values through nature exploration. Disney is also harness the power of creativity and imagination to improve the lives of kids and the communities they live in.

C. What makes you believe this company is really ethical and why you trust it?

We are the generation that deeply affected by Disney’s cartoon characters and movies. For more than nine decades, the name Walt Disney has been preeminent in the field of family entertainment. Disneyland seems like a fairy-tale world not only for children but also for adults. The core culture of Disney is dream and faith.

Disney was started on Walt Disney’s dream and is still working on his dream. Disney has committed to incorporate best-in-class business and Ethics standards and to be a good corporate citizen of the planet.
Since 2009, Disney has invested in carbon-offset projects around the world. During 2011, Disney completed investments in reforestation projects in the Angeles National Forest, Cuyamaca State Park, and in Sichuan province in China.

D.The possible challenges facing the company in the future and how you think this company may improve.

1.Disney’s purchaseofMarvelisstillinquestion.
On December 31, 2009, the Company completed an acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (Marvel). The Comic characters of Marvel are more adult and masculine with violence. But the cartoon characters of Disney are kind and gentle. After the acquisition, the Disney television network began play Marvel’s cartoon. We think this acquisition must give a bad influence on children who has no judgment and will confuse Disney’s consumers. Can you image that Fantastic Four stand together with Mickey?

We think that Disney must insist the policy and attitude towards young children. Maintain clear, age-appropriate and respectful guidelines for marketing to kids and make some limitation on the contact with Marvel’s cartoon.

2.Establisha“zero-pollution”shanghaiDisneylandpark.
Although shanghai Disneyland asserted that they will use leading environmental cleaning standards to ensure “zero-pollution”. Do you think is this practical? Of course not. One of the greatest lessons we can ever learn is that 90% fish of Changsha Bay was dead because the pollution of hongkong Disneyland park.

So how to protect this huge land resources? One hand is Disney do their best to minimize their environmental footprint. Achieve zero net direct greenhouse gas emissions, educe indirect greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption, send zero waste to landfills, and minimize water use. The other hand is a supervisory role of government. Only after that can we ensure the least pollution.

3.MakeShanghaiDisneymoreacceptable.
Whether Chinese even Shanghaies would like the American recreation? We can see the failure of Disneyland in Paris that its defense against American culture invasion. There is also huge culture difference between Chinese and American.

So how can shanghai Disney more acceptable? Make Chinese Disney more Chinese. For instance, make service and price more Chinese.

Since 1923 Disney have been the most influent enterteinment company in the world. His influence starts at children and ends at parents. I remember my father surprising me with a big CD ( VINYL DISC) of seven Dwarfs, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Toy Story or The Lion King. Probably Seven Dwarfs is the film i’ve seen the most in my life and like me there are lot of children who based his childhood watching Disney Films.

Nowadays Disney have Parcs and resorts, which receives million visits every year, TV channels, Owns Pixar, Marvel and Lucas Films ( Star wars) and sells toys and merchandising of his films and is and his Facebook Page is followed by 12.000.000 of people.
Realized how much impacts produce The Walt Disney Company to people it’s moment to express our opinion.

Is Disney making enough for transmitting the correct values to people?
Times are changing, Is his business based in OLD CHARACTERS ?
    ...

I Encourage those who love Disney to share some ideas about Disney, his characters, his business, the influence it have or whatever they want.

I agree with you. Absolutely, I think the same of you, Disney have been the most influent entertainment company in the world. I saw a lot of Disney films, Toy Story, The Lion King, Seven Dwarfs, etc. and also Mickey Mouse, Goofy.

Answering your questions, the first question, I think that ten or twenty years ago, this question have a concrete answer: Yes. But nowadays, I have some doubts. Because, as the text says, Disney resort in Shanghai has problems with pollution, etc. and this is not the message that Disney wants to give around the world.
Maybe, they would focus on films like The Lion King and Toy Story and adapted it strategy for nowadays.

In relation to the second question, and very relevant that I said before, I think that yes, it is true that, probably, his business is based in old characters. But, I think that they can adapt the characters for nowadays. It is not difficult and they can adapt the characters and continues transmitting the correct values to people that it is so important.
However, I think that Marvel is not a bad influence that text says. Simply, it is another branch for "teenagers". It has some violence scene, but in the other hand, it has a good ending.

I would like to think that Disney will always exist. For society in general it is very important the values that provides to all of us.

Since I was a child I have been watching Walt Disney movies I have read their books and I have played with their products.

I think that all this was good for me and other kids that like me they have grown with Walt Disney because this company product promote the creativity and imagination, important faculties for kids.
Our society and technologies have changed, and the people values too. I think that Wald Disney Company know it and they offer their products for adapt a new society.

Well, I don’t believe the Walt Disney Company have the capacity to inspire kids and their families to make real and lasting change in the world, maybe this is too much for a company.

And in regard to environmental respect and the employment conditions of workers, I believe that the best way to know the truth is being a worker of Walt Disney Company.

Nowadays we know that Walt Disney is one of the most important companies around the world in topics of entertainment from children to adults. Since we were so young, we will have seen more that a hundred of films produced by Walt Disney, but we need to go beyond this simple question. First of all, we have to ask ourself if this company is as socially responsible as they say and if the condicions of the workers are as good as they try to show.

Answering the first question, we know that this company is part of the RSE (responsible social business) so they have controls in topics related to be responsible with the environment and with the quality of their products and services. As well as, to answer the second question, this is only one way to knowit and the best option is about personal opinions of people who have been working for this company.

Although in many media articles has been said that Walt Disney was not considered a socially responsible company, we will never know and we just have to trust in which topics that we have acces.

So finally and to conclude it, a good therapy would be to think over and internalize it trying to find answers to these questions that involve the development of an enterprise and merely, trusting in the data that are published in different media channels.

After Reading this comment about Walt Disney I agree with the fact that it is an example of good strategy in business. Nowadays, it stills being the biggest entertainment giant and the most famous cartoon company.
Regarding the ethical challenges, values and principles that Walt Disney wants to implement, it is clear that imagination, creativity, and so one are world-wide known.

Otherwise, the kids are the core of the company and they learn the values and principles that they see in Disney, making this company in a huge influence. So, my question is where is the limit of the influence? Are all the values implemented by Disney good? We have a lot of examples that demonstrate some strange values implemented by this company. For instance, “The three little pigs” was very criticized by the Jewish community; some scenes of Mickey Mouse are considered as promoting animal abuse...and finally, a lot of subliminal messages are included in Walt Disney movies as “The Lion King” or “Fantasia”.

Personally, I am totally found of Walt Disney since I was a little girl, and even if I have some doubts of the values and principles promoted by the company, I still love this magic world.

Walt Disney has inspired me good feelings. I think it is important for the kids to have hope at this time of their lives. This firm creates a lot of films that transmits these feelings and everybody likes their films! Also, this last factor is important that maybe ir creates a link between father, mother and children.
It is beautiful that a company exists that creates this kind of products and I like the values and feelings that the firm transmits.

It is beautiful that a company that creates this kind of products exists and I like the values and feelings that the firm transmits.

I think that the strategy of Disney is efficient.

The firm make a lot of values thought the different films that they do and this conect the costumer and company with the feelings.

Then, the costumer like the product of this company, so they buy a lot of products. For instance, if you like one film because it’s transmit good values, maybe you would buy toys, the films or a lot of differents products that they trade.

The kids is the most important part of the compnay and they know how atract this children.

Finally, I want to say one more thing.

If the parents like the flims of this company, they would transmit the values and feelings to the kids.
This is a competitve advantage for them.

In my opinion, this company is influenced by its past, so their values must change, when you have 5 years you can believe in this values but not after.
The past of Walt Disney talk about princesses, ladies, to be rescued with inconsequential problems with nothing important to do and talk about mens who must take care and love princes.
Nowadays, Walt Disney must change our values and update to present times.
Must created a new values and new vision to motivate the children to learn, to overcome and respect others. Tehy must change the vision of the ladies and the role of the woman in the society.

Nowadays Walt Disney has diversified its market acquiring Pixar, Lucas Films and other companies but its brand is continues influenced by their past.

Nowadays we know that Walt Disney is one of the most important companies around the world from children to adults. Since I was young, I have seen lots of films produced by Walt Disney. I agree with the idea that Disney is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of children and families because this company actually made us feel happy and currently too. Through your films, it manages to go to another world and focus the attention at this.

On the other hand, I think the Ethical challenges are an example to pursue both companies and customers as Disney is committed to the total well-being of their employees and also, the well-being and happiness of kids and families. Besides, Disney uses the creativity and imagination to improve the lives of kids and the communities they live in so I believe it’s a huge, positive point for the firm for competitive differentiation.
Furthermore, I think people trust in this company because for more than nine decades, the name Walt Disney has been preeminent in the field of family entertainment because of quality and effort until today. Regarding possible challenges in the future, I think it’s great that the company meets other cultures and try to improve them.

Finally, I believe this company can improve innovating as has been done so far for increasingly surprised, for example it could find answers to the questions of Chinese Disney with a defined study.

      I agree with you absolutely.
On the one hand, we know that since 1923 Disney is a brand that provides entertainment to children and their families. I remember when I was a child; every weekend I saw Disney movies with my brothers and parents. The whole family would spend hours and hours watching these films. My favorite film of Disney is the Lion King, because its content and history is especially for me.
Today everything has changed, not only can watch movies in the cinema or on television. In the Disney page you can find all kinds of photos, pictures, activities, etc. It is a space dedicated to children with entertainment. Now it is much easier to access to this world than before. This is the website: (http://www.disney.es/peliculas-disney/)

On the other hand, I agree that Disney acts ethically in the world. Firstly, Disney is a company that is committed to minimizing the environmental impact with footprint’s Disney. Secondly it helps the welfare of families with the products and services offered, and it encourages children to look at life positively. His films make you into a dream world full of happiness and fantasy. But it also shows the negative side of life with saddest movies that reflects the reality: for example the Lion King that shows the death of his father. In all films shows the values of life to children.

Nowadays, has introduced more adult characters and more violence. Instead, the characters of cartoons back then were far more sweet and kind. In my opinion, I think that Disney should continue with this type of character,(cheerful, gentle, innocent, funny) offering films for children, how it has always done. without being influenced by Marvel. I miss movies of before; I would like the previous films with characters rather than with those of today.

I believe that American culture and the culture of China or Shanghai are very different. Disney has to offer characters and theme parks there that have the characteristics of these cultures. For example, it can offer characters with physical features of these countries and in the parks it offers cheaper rates than in America because China is known for its cheap labor. Then as a global company has to adapt to different cultures if it wants to have a great positive influence around the world

Finally I think that Disney should constantly innovate to remain one of the top entertainment companies in the world.

We have all spent our childhood watching hours and hours of Disney’s films. The Lion King, Peter Pan, The Beauty and the Beast..all this movies bring back memories of when we were young. In those times, everything seemed nice and cheerful for us and now, many years after, we can conclude that it was a great way to enhance the well-being of children and families.

We always thought in Walt Disney as a nice period of our lives, but not as a company. It’s a huge company, with resorts, an established brand, etc. and as such, it has to adapt to all the changes. They considered the option of buying Marvel, and they did it. But in my opinion, it wasn’t the best solution. Since the company was founded, they worked for a concrete and specific target, children. They’ve tried to transmit a range of values that with the Marvel saga, may be affected. Despite this, they can also consider Marvel as a new branch for teenagers, as Lluís said before. If they can interact with both targets, they will have a loyal public that will bring even more benefits. In conclusion, times are changing, but Walt Disney is trying to keep their old characters and bringing new faces to maintain their public. Furthermore, if Walt Disney is even the most famous cartoon company in the world, maybe they are doing the right thing, aren’t they?

Finally, linked to the issue of values, we may say that in the last years there have been examples in Walt Disney films in which these promoted principles could be questioned.

As some of the students said earlier, Walt Disney is a clear symbol of our childhood and represents innocence and enthusiasm of children. For them, there are no limits, everything is possible, and that’s what Walt Disney also symbolizes.

Personally, I think their ethic actions are highly visible in their daily lives and reinforce the brand in a high degree. In addition, Walt Disney not only responsible for the people but also the environment, and that makes them a better company.

What I think most important are the three biggest problems facing the company. First, I think they should make a big task to overcome the problems of pollution in Shanghai and their adaptation to Chinese culture.
But what really worries me is the line of globalization that is taking Disney to other markets, such as the superheroes (who recently bought the Star Wars sagas and Pirates of the Caribbean for new films).
Focusing too much on these new acquisitions could not destroy the image that has been leading the various markets where they work.

    Word reference
I read the study in this page of the Walt Disney Company, I think is interesting this article, when I was a child watched the films for Disney, and now I like this films and the new films.
I never listened for this company was social criteria; because I’ve never read for a news or newspaper they said this notice.
I think the fact of having read only here it’s very negative vision for this company, because I think it’s important and the company has never discussed this case, in another channels for the communicate

Since she was a child remember growing up with each of the characters from both Disney films, cartoons and books.
Disney is one of the leading entertainment companies and media, which not only focuses on the children’s sector, but which aims to entertain the whole family and friends.
It is a company that over the years has known how to adapt to different cultures, social changes and new technologies, which has allowed him to grow and be present worldwide.
Disney tries to encourage children’s imagination from the different projects carried out, besides trying to promote values such as friendship, solidarity and love.
Furthermore, note that in many cases creates prototypes that today do not correspond at all with reality, for example the figure of charming prince, happy family or the fact that the woman is who has to take the household and children, helping to create a society full of sexist stereotypes. Also many times when the character representing bad or stupid, choose someone who is of one race non-white or in a lower social class.
Finally in conclusion I can say that Walt Disney Company has kept on top thanks to good management and its ability to diversify into different products and services offered, but you should still try to improve some aspects such as those mentioned above.

The Walt Disney Company known to all the world, and not only as a company but mainly when we think of Disney come to mind childhood memories.
That is a company that not only inspires the public which it is directed (the children) also inspires to adults who also had a "Disney stage" that always remember. By this we can say that their slogan "Where Dreams Come True" is true at all ages.
So Disney should maintain its strategy and this has been a huge success and allow him to retain his audience as before.

To improve should adapt to the Chinese culture, this favor will have a faithful audience as the company would adapt more to the likes of the public and this would mean greater success for the company.

Finally I think Disney to maintain its principles and environmental approach, should fix some problems that have in any area, so firm and be coherent with their business vision.

  • The Walt Disney Company 28 February 2013 at 23:35 , by Miriam

Like all of you, I grew up with Disney too. Throughout my childhood I’ve seen Disney films and all of them reminds me a special song, special feeling or even a specific memory.
Basically, I know the most popular and mythical films because I prefer old movies, like The Jungle Book or The Lion King, than the latest movies like Cars or Nemo. But at the same time I think that Disney’s values are the same as those of a few years ago.

It’s important to continue to give the image of a family business, which helps the children education and keep together the family. In this way, people will continue to buy Disney products and see this brand as one that helps give values and teaches good manners.

On the other hand, nowadays, people say that Disney films make children confused because the company play with their feelings.
But in general, Disney should continue with its strategy to have a prestigious image and educator for parents and children.

  • The Walt Disney Company 28 February 2013 at 23:58 , by Reich

Walt Disney is a company that through its films It wants to transmit a fantasy world for children. When I was a child I always watched all films because I liked very much, and even now I still watching films of this company.
On the other hand, I think Walt Disney has changed the style of his films, before the majority of his films were based on princesses who looked for her princes. Nowadays, Walt Disney makes films with more action, where the role of woman has evolved, it has left the stereotype of the woman who was only focused on finding a husband and being perfect for him. Currently, that concept has changed and its main characters are created to be more open-minded, where the woman assumes a role more active and fighter.
Walt Disney is known worldwide for providing a suitable film for child gender and demonstrated by their continued success.

Walt Disney is the perfect example that a company can get great returns and profit, while export values around the world.

I think That the vision and the mission that Disney transmits has a lot to do with the importance that the organization gives to future generations. His films and characters are very concerned with the environment, and family values. In my opinion, Disney should not lose this goal, and keep working hard to continue associating their brand with these ethical values and commitment.

I think Disney cartoon’s should remain fun, creative and imaginative, the acquisition of Marvel should not be a bad influence on the corporate image of the brand.

  • The Walt Disney Company 6 March 2013 at 23:42 , by Ramon Rovira

Without any doubt Walt Disney has played an important part of my childhood, like in the majority of people of our society I presume. It is a good way of entertainment deeply integrated in the children life. I’ve always thought that Walt Disney were in favour of good ethics modals and I wouldn’t dare to question it in my childhood times. But as I was getting older, I realized that in some of its films, such as "The lion king", some subliminal messages appeared and the "Mickey Mouse" film received some criticisms about animal abuse. So after this, let me doubt about the Walt Disney’s ethics that have always told me.

Talking about the acquisition of Marvel, I’m not in favour of it. I believe that Walt Disney is so famous thanks to its cartoons focused on kids and it is a bad idea to enter a new segment with new kind of costumers just to enlarge the fame of Walt Disney. If it doesn’t succeed, the Walt Disney might lose its fame that nowadays has after many years working hard.

    • The Walt Disney Company 7 March 2013 at 02:31 , by Carlos G

First of all, I’m totally agree with my partner Ramon linked to the Disney’s values that they transmited me when I was a child. Generation after generation has grown up with their stories and fantasies. Disney has known how connect with the childhood of the absolut majority of the children from they started to build his empire. And this one has been his main success.

But the things change...and the thoughts of the children too... The girls don’t want to be princess, nowadays, the girls want to be famous, actresses or singstars. And in the same way the boys, they don’t dream to be the hero who rescue the princess, they want to save the planet, the humanity, they want to be a really hero.

The children grow up much faster than ten or twenty years ago. And Disney has realized of that. For this reason I think that is a great success the purchase of Marvel trying to get close Superman, Batman or Spiderman to the children.

Brave, the recent awarded of the Oscar to The Best animated film tells the story of a young girl’s hero. How many female heroes has had Disney since 1923? Mulan? Someone more?

Obviusly, if you go to a Disney’s shop, you will find a lot of merchandising linked to Toy Story, Peter Pan or Cinderella. But, I’m totally sure that you will find much more merchandising about Hannah Montana, Iron Man or Phineas and Ferb.

Disney must give to the children what children want, that’s all.

      Carlos.

As we all know Walt Disney is a big entertainment company in the world.
This company has a lot of influence in children all around the world; we all have grown up watching Walt Disney’s films. That means believing in fantasy, magic, love, creativity and so on… which are the values that are taught in their films.

These are the values that we are supposed to learn, but there are some examples against this. Personally I’ve been disappointed with some films so I think they should look more carefully some scenes of their films.

Nevertheless I still watch some of their films and some of them are still in my “favorite movie’s ranking”.

What to say about Walt Disney, is a very big and known company and it has made our lives from childhood. Its films has been seen by children and adults since many years ago and has been made you laugh, cry and feel. It’s obviously that its a company with a lot of success and benefits, but it is really a perfect company?

Along the years emerged some criticism about this company, maybe because is a big influence over the children and if the company is wrong thw children can learn something bad. We don’t know if Walt Disney is really ethical or not because there are a lot of different opinions about this but we know that it has to be the better than it can because is a big influence for all and for the children.

So we can know the different opinions, the pros and the againsts but its difficult to know the true.

Nowadays, the Walt Disney Company is a large entertainment organization with the significant influence both on children and on adults. They are focused on offering high-quality entertainment and create safe environment for everyone. I am considered to be a generation that have grown with Disney and deeply affected by its cartoons. The company try to transmit a lot of values and principles thought the different cartoons/movies. Each cartoon/movie helps to distinguish what is good and bad in the world from the early ages, develop the creativity as well as imagination. For example, Winnie the Pooh taught us to believe in true friendship and cherish our friends since childhood. Also, the Lion King, a story that portrays a journey to adulthood and inspire children to achieve their goals and never give up. In my judgement, Disney should work hard in order to associate their company with these ethical values till the end.

When it comes to ethical challenges for example in Hong Kong, in my opinion Disney and HK government should insist on using leading environmental cleaning standards to ensure “zero-pollution” and minimize their environmental footprint. The government and the Disney company receive a lot of revenue each year, so they must care about people from Discovery Bay and take certain measures.

In conclusion, every time when I visit Disneyland I feel myself as in fairy tale, this place inspire me every time to attain my goal and never give up. Every time when I am here, I inspire with the Walt Disney quote: All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.
